How to calculate engagement rate (with benchmarks)
Formulas, benchmarks and a free calculator
Follower counts are easy to show off and hard to trust. Engagement rate tells you more: how many of the people who could see your posts actually reacted to them. It's the number brands look at before working with a creator, and the one that shows whether your content is landing.
What engagement rate is
Engagement rate is the share of people who interacted with a post, as a percentage. Interactions usually means likes, comments, shares and saves. On some platforms it also includes link clicks.
The tricky part is "the people who could see it". There are three common ways to measure it, and they give very different numbers.
The three engagement rate formulas
| Method | Formula | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| By followers | interactions ÷ followers × 100 | Comparing accounts, using numbers anyone can see |
| By reach | interactions ÷ people reached × 100 | Your own posts, using your analytics |
| By views | interactions ÷ views × 100 | Video on TikTok and YouTube |
Example. An Instagram post gets 180 likes, 12 comments, 6 shares and 9 saves: 207 interactions. The account has 12,400 followers.
207 ÷ 12,400 × 100 = 1.67%
For an average across several posts, add up the interactions of all the posts, then divide by followers times the number of posts. With reach or views, divide by the total reach or views of those posts.
What is a good engagement rate?
It depends on the platform and the method. These are rounded medians for brand accounts from 2025 reports by Socialinsider and Rival IQ:
| Platform | Typical rate | Measured by |
|---|---|---|
| about 0.5% | followers | |
| TikTok | about 3.5% | views |
| about 4% | impressions | |
| about 0.15% | followers | |
| X | about 0.15% | followers |
| YouTube | about 3% | views |
Take these as a rough guide rather than a target. Each report measures a little differently, and the numbers move every year. Smaller and personal accounts usually score much higher than brands: an account with 2,000 engaged followers can easily beat 3% on Instagram.
Calculate yours for free
- Open the engagement rate calculator and pick the platform.
- Choose how to calculate it: by followers, by reach or by views.
- Enter your numbers. For an average, add totals for several posts and set the number of posts.
- See your rate, where it sits against the typical range for that platform, and how many more interactions per post would make it good.
- Check which interactions make up your total, to see whether people mostly like, comment, share or save.
Your numbers are kept in your browser for next time.
How to improve your engagement rate
- Ask a real question. Comments come from posts that invite an opinion, not from "thoughts?" at the end.
- Make it worth saving. Checklists, templates and how-tos earn saves, which many platforms treat as a strong signal.
- Lead with the hook. The first line or the first second decides whether anyone stays. See how to write headlines that get clicks.
- Reply to comments. Early replies keep the conversation going and show the post to more people.
- Post less, but better. One strong post usually beats three rushed ones.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate engagement rate?
Add up likes, comments, shares and saves, divide by followers (or reach, or views) and multiply by 100.
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?
For brand accounts, around 0.5% by followers is typical and 1% or more is good. Smaller accounts often reach 3% or more.
Should I use followers or reach?
Use followers to compare accounts, since anyone can see those numbers. Use reach for your own posts, because it shows how the people who actually saw the post reacted.
Why is my engagement rate going down?
Rates are falling across most platforms as feeds get more crowded. Compare yourself with the typical rate for your platform, and with your own past posts, rather than with old benchmarks.
